A 27-year-old man has been arrested and made a brief appearance in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court in connection with the brazen attempted murder of uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party Ilembe District Secretary Zanele Mbhamali and her husband. The breakthrough was announced by the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team, which took over the high-profile investigation following a shooting that sent shockwaves through the province’s political landscape last month.
The incident occurred on the evening of 24 June 2024 on a rural road near Ndwedwe, roughly 45 kilometres north of Durban. Mbhamali and her husband were travelling in their vehicle when unknown gunmen opened fire on them in what authorities have described as a targeted attack. Both victims sustained gunshot wounds but survived the ambush, though they remain in recovery. The motive for the shooting has not been officially confirmed, but police are exploring political and personal angles, given the highly charged political climate in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Political Killings Task Team, a specialised unit established to probe politically motivated murders and attempted murders in the province, took over the case shortly after the shooting. According to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the team’s dedicated efforts led to the arrest of the suspect on Monday, 12 August 2024, following intensive intelligence-driven investigations. The suspect, whose identity has not been released pending further legal proceedings, faces charges of attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm.
During his court appearance, the suspect was remanded in custody and the case was postponed to 20 August for a formal bail application and further investigation. The task team has indicated that more arrests are not being ruled out as the investigation continues to unfold.
