SASSA Warns Grant Reviews Will Delay August Payments for Affected Beneficiaries

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has issued a formal warning that beneficiaries whose grants are currently under review will not receive their payments during the standard three-day cycle scheduled for August. Instead, affected recipients will be paid on the fourth payment day, marking an unusual disruption to the agency’s long-established monthly payout schedule.

The announcement, made by SASSA officials in Pretoria, has sparked concern among social grant beneficiaries who rely on the timely disbursement of funds for their daily survival. According to the agency, the delay is an administrative necessity resulting from ongoing verification and review processes aimed at ensuring that only eligible individuals continue to receive grants. The reviews are part of SASSA’s broader efforts to clean up its beneficiary database, eliminate fraud, and redirect resources to those most in need.

Under the normal payment schedule, grants are disbursed over three consecutive days each month, with older persons, persons with disabilities, and child grant recipients assigned specific dates. However, SASSA confirmed that beneficiaries flagged for review will be shifted to the fourth day, a move that could create financial strain for households already struggling with the high cost of living.

SASSA has urged affected beneficiaries not to panic, assuring them that payments will be processed once the reviews are concluded. The agency encouraged grant recipients to ensure their contact details are up to date and to respond promptly to any requests for documentation to expedite the verification process. Community-based organisations and social workers have been mobilised to assist beneficiaries who may face challenges navigating the review process.

The announcement has drawn mixed reactions. While some civil society groups have expressed understanding of the need for database integrity, others have criticised SASSA for not providing clearer communication or a more accommodating timeline. Concern has also been raised about the vulnerability of elderly and disabled beneficiaries who may struggle to access information or travel to SASSA offices. The agency has reassured the public that the delays are temporary and that all verified beneficiaries will receive their full entitlement, albeit later than usual. SASSA reiterated its commitment to ensuring a fair and efficient social security system while urging patience from grant recipients during this transitional period.
