South Africans Name Chery’s New Bakkie “Grootman” After Public Vote

Chinese automaker Chery has announced that its upcoming double-cab bakkie will be named “Grootman” following a nationwide public competition that drew thousands of entries and captured the imagination of South African motoring enthusiasts. The name was selected from a shortlist of finalists that included “Bakkie” and “Chief,” with “Grootman” emerging as the clear favourite, a fitting moniker for a rugged, versatile vehicle designed to meet the demands of work, family, and business life.

The vehicle, codenamed KP31, is a plug-in hybrid double-cab that pairs a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine with electric power, delivering a combined output of 350 kW and a hefty 800 Nm of torque. It offers up to 100 kilometres of electric-only range, making it suitable for daily commutes and short trips without burning a drop of diesel. With a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms, the Grootman is positioned as a serious workhorse, while vehicle-to-load technology allows it to power tools, appliances, or camping equipment, a feature that will appeal to both commercial users and outdoor adventurers.

The name “Grootman,” a colloquial South African term often used to denote respect for an elder or a man of stature, resonated with voters who appreciated the local flavour and the vehicle’s imposing presence. Chery’s General Manager, Jay Jay Botes, praised the public’s engagement with the competition, noting that the winning name reflected the brand’s commitment to understanding and serving the South African market. “The response was overwhelming, and ‘Grootman’ captures the spirit of what this bakkie represents, strength, reliability, and respect,” Botes said.

Social media has been abuzz with jokes and memes, including the playful “Chery Ye Grootman,” which has become a popular catchphrase among fans. The Grootman is set to launch in the first quarter of 2027, where it will compete against established rivals such as the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max. With its hybrid powertrain, impressive towing capacity, and locally inspired name, Chery is hoping the Grootman will make a significant impact in one of South Africa’s most competitive vehicle segments.

For now, the buzz surrounding the name suggests that Chery has already succeeded in one crucial aspect of the launch: getting South Africans talking. Whether the Grootman lives up to its name on the road remains to be seen, but the early signs are promising.
