SASSA Clarifies Grant Reviews, Warns Beneficiaries Not To Ignore Notifications

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has clarified that a social grant review does not automatically mean that a beneficiary’s grant will be cancelled or that a new application has been rejected.

SASSA says a review is a process carried out after a grant has already been approved to determine whether a beneficiary still meets the qualifying requirements and whether their circumstances have changed.

The agency says reviews may be triggered by changes in income or financial circumstances, employment, marital status, residential address, contact details, care arrangements for children, or relevant medical circumstances. Beneficiaries are therefore encouraged to keep their personal information up to date, particularly their cellphone numbers, as SASSA uses these details to communicate important notices and review notifications.

SASSA is urging beneficiaries who receive a notification requiring them to participate in a review not to ignore it. The agency says beneficiaries should respond within the stipulated period and provide the requested information or documentation to confirm their continued eligibility.

Failure to cooperate with a review could result in the suspension of a grant. Beneficiaries whose grants have been suspended for failing to complete a review may have to follow the necessary process to resolve the matter and, where applicable, apply for restoration within the prescribed period.

SASSA has also reminded beneficiaries of the October 2026 payment dates, with the Older Persons Grant scheduled for 2 October 2026 and the Disability Grant for 5 October 2026.
