Residents across parts of Soshanguve are facing continued low water pressure and, in some areas, no water supply as the City of Tshwane works to repair a major bulk water pipeline supplying the Kruisfontein Reservoirs.
The City says a serious emergency was discovered following the rupture of a 1 000mm asbestos-cement bulk water pipeline in Soshanguve. During excavation, technical teams found extensive damage, with several sections of the pipeline broken and some completely dislodged.
According to the City, the affected system is currently receiving water at approximately 1 bar, significantly below the normal pressure of around 5 bar from the Hartebeeshoek Reservoir system. The City and Rand Water are investigating the cause of the reduced pressure while repair teams work to contain the situation.
The City says the steel pipe currently available on site is slightly shorter than required, prompting teams to collect an additional section from the depot. Once the required pipe arrives, workers will complete the welding and install an adaptor joint connecting the damaged asbestos-cement pipeline to the steel pipe.
Repairs are expected to be completed by midnight on Sunday, 27 September 2026, subject to conditions on site.
The affected areas include Haakdoornboom, Klipfontein, Klipkruisfontein, Kruisfontein, Wentzelsrust, Soshanguve East, Soshanguve South, Extensions 10 to 14, and Soshanguve Blocks A, B, TT, VV and XX.
The City has apologised to residents for the disruption and says further updates will be issued as the repair work progresses. Tshwane Metro Police Department and private security personnel are also providing security at the repair site.
