Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya has resigned from the South African Police Service (SAPS) with immediate effect, bringing his career in the police service to an abrupt end as disciplinary proceedings against him got underway on Monday, 12 October 2026.
According to reports the SAPS has classified his departure as a “dishonourable discharge”, marking a dramatic development in the controversy surrounding the suspended deputy national police commissioner.
Sibiya has been under intense scrutiny following explosive allegations raised before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating claims of corruption, criminal networks and interference within the criminal justice system.
One of the major allegations concerns claims that Sibiya was linked to controversial businessman Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala, who has been implicated in a controversial SAPS tender worth hundreds of millions of rand. Testimony before the commission also raised questions about alleged cash payments, gifts and the handling of sensitive police information. Sibiya has denied wrongdoing in relation to the allegations.
The scandal deepened in September when Sibiya was arrested and charged in a separate criminal case involving allegations of rape, human trafficking and the sexual grooming of a 16-year-old girl. He has denied the charges, and the allegations have yet to be proven in court.
His resignation comes as the disciplinary process threatens to further expose the allegations surrounding one of the country’s most senior police officials.
