Government urged to improve service delivery and tackle inequality
Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Namane Masemola, has called on all spheres of government to work together to improve service delivery and address poverty, unemployment and inequality.
Masemola was speaking on behalf of Deputy President Paul Mashatile at the 8th Social Justice Summit held at Stellenbosch University in the Western Cape.
He said the District Development Model must ensure that government plans lead to real improvements in people’s lives, including better access to water, sanitation, healthcare, education, housing and economic opportunities.
Masemola highlighted challenges facing municipalities, including financial difficulties, poor governance and a lack of capacity, which continue to affect service delivery.
He called for better coordination between national, provincial and local government, improved use of budgets, stronger partnerships with communities and businesses, and greater accountability.
With the 2030 deadline for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals approaching, Masemola urged delegates to move beyond discussions and focus on practical solutions that benefit vulnerable communities, particularly women, young people, persons with disabilities and rural residents.
The summit was held under the theme of strengthening intergovernmental relations through the District Development Model to advance sustainable development and social justice.
