SANTACO Launches Pretoria CBD Decongestion Drive to Tackle Traffic Congestion

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) Greater Tshwane Regional Taxi Council has launched a targeted Decongestion Drive in the Pretoria Central Business District to ease daily traffic build-ups caused by public transport vehicles.

The initiative focuses on reorganising taxi ranks, enforcing designated loading and offloading zones, and reducing the illegal stopping and parking that contributes significantly to congestion. SANTACO has committed to working closely with the City of Tshwane’s traffic authorities and metro police to ensure compliance.

“This is not about punishing our members; it is about creating a more efficient, safer, and more orderly environment for everyone,” a SANTACO spokesperson said. “A decongested CBD benefits commuters, businesses, and taxi operators alike.”

The drive includes public awareness campaigns aimed at educating operators and passengers about adhering to traffic regulations. Non-compliant operators will face disciplinary action, including fines and possible suspension.

The City of Tshwane has welcomed the initiative, noting that CBD congestion costs the local economy millions in lost productivity each year. Officials have pledged increased traffic enforcement and infrastructure improvements where necessary.

For commuters who navigate the CBD daily, the Decongestion Drive offers hope that the daily grind may soon become more bearable. Its success will depend on sustained cooperation between all parties.
