President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Leonard Gaoretelelwe Lekgetho as the new permanent head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), effective Tuesday, 1 September 2026.
Lekgetho has been serving as acting head of the SIU since Advocate Andy Mothibi left the position in February to become the National Director of Public Prosecutions.
Lekgetho brings 19 years of experience at the SIU, having served in various roles, including investigations and his current position as Chief Operations Officer. He also previously worked as an investigator in the former Directorate of Special Operations.
The new SIU head holds degrees in law, education and science, as well as a diploma in forensic auditing and a postgraduate diploma in cyber law.
The SIU investigates serious allegations of corruption, maladministration and malpractice involving state institutions, assets and public funds. It also has the power to take civil action to recover financial losses suffered by state institutions.
President Ramaphosa has wished Lekgetho well as he takes permanent leadership of the unit, which plays a key role in combating corruption and strengthening South Africa’s criminal justice system.
