In a targeted enforcement operation over the weekend, officials from the KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department arrested eight truck drivers in Pietermaritzburg on charges of being undocumented migrants, as part of a broader crackdown on road safety and immigration compliance. The operation, named Nenzani La Ezweni, was led by female officers in a symbolic closing event for Women’s Month, underscoring the role of women in frontline law enforcement.
The drivers, who were operating heavy vehicles on routes through the city and surrounding areas, were taken into custody after failing to produce valid documentation confirming their legal status in the country. They are expected to appear in court in due course, facing charges related to contravention of the Immigration Act. The arrests have sparked debate about the enforcement of immigration laws in the transport sector, with some industry bodies calling for greater clarity on the status of foreign drivers, while others have raised concerns about potential xenophobia in enforcement practices.
Beyond the arrests, the operation yielded significant results: a total of 52 vehicles were suspended for various roadworthiness violations, and 45 motorists were served with notices of prosecution for offences ranging from unroadworthy vehicles to expired licenses and falsified documentation. The operation was praised by provincial transport authorities as a “successful multi-pronged intervention” aimed at improving safety and compliance on the province’s roads.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siphosihle Hlophe commended the female officers for their professionalism, noting that the operation demonstrated that women are equally capable of leading high-stakes enforcement efforts. As the clean-up continues, the province has vowed to intensify similar operations in the coming months, with authorities warning that no one is above the law—whether behind the wheel or in the enforcement of immigration and road safety regulations.
