Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae has extended a warm welcome to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) delegation as it arrives in the province for a critical week-long oversight visit aimed at assessing the progress and quality of key infrastructure projects across the region. The NCOP’s annual Provincial Week programme, which this year places a sharp focus on the state of public infrastructure, will see delegates conduct site visits, engage with municipal officials, and interact with communities to evaluate whether provincial spending is translating into tangible delivery.
The visit carries an added layer of significance, as it includes a return to several projects that were flagged as incomplete during the previous NCOP oversight mission in 2024. These projects, spanning water and sanitation, road construction, and school refurbishments, had been highlighted as examples of underperformance and delayed execution. The NCOP’s return signals a determination to hold the provincial government accountable for its commitments and to track whether remedial measures have been implemented.
Premier Letsoha-Mathae, in her welcoming address, acknowledged the province’s challenges while expressing confidence that the oversight visit would demonstrate tangible improvements. “We have nothing to hide and everything to gain from transparent engagement,” she said. “The Free State has made significant strides in addressing the gaps identified in 2024, and we invite the NCOP to see the progress firsthand.”
The oversight delegation is expected to table a detailed report upon the conclusion of its visit, with recommendations for both immediate corrective actions and long-term strategic improvements. Civil society organisations have welcomed the intervention, noting that many communities have grown weary of incomplete projects and mismanaged budgets.
