The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Eastern Cape will host its Provincial Members Assembly on 18 and 19 August 2026 in East London. The two day gathering will bring together municipal leaders, government representatives and investors to discuss local government performance, economic development and preparations for the seventh administration following the 2026 Local Government Elections.
The assembly will give municipalities an opportunity to review their progress, address ongoing challenges and identify ways to strengthen governance and improve service delivery. It will also provide a platform to discuss key issues affecting municipalities across the province.
The first day will focus on a Local Government Investment Promotion Lekgotla, where municipalities will showcase projects that are ready for investment. The session will also encourage partnerships between government and the private sector and explore ways of attracting investment to communities.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane and SALGA President Councillor Bheke Stofile are expected to officially open the Lekgotla. Government departments and economic institutions will also explain the support available to municipalities to promote local economic development and unlock investment opportunities.
On the second day, Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Zolile Williams is expected to reflect on the achievements of the sixth administration and outline priorities for the incoming seventh administration. The focus will be on strengthening cooperation between government structures and improving service delivery.
SALGA says the assembly comes at an important time as municipalities prepare for a new administration. The gathering will also recognise SALGA’s 30 years of promoting developmental local government, while focusing on stronger governance, investment and inclusive economic growth in the Eastern Cape.
