Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has extended the retrenchment consultation period at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) until the end of August 2026. The extension will give a Ministerial Task Team more time to find alternatives to job losses affecting employees.
Of the 580 employees initially affected, 43 have accepted early retirement packages, while 102 have been placed in available positions within PRASA. Another 208 Protection Services employees have been set aside while discussions with Transnet continue over the transfer of stations and related assets.
The Task Team, made up of representatives from the Department of Transport, organised labour and PRASA management, is expected to explore options for the remaining 227 employees. The retrenchment process began in November 2025 as PRASA sought to address excess staffing within its Long-Distance Passenger Services.
