Police have launched a high-level investigation following the attempted assassination of suspended Crime Intelligence Major-General Feroz Khan, who was shot multiple times in Houghton, Johannesburg, on Sunday evening.
Khan was rushed to Milpark Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. He remains in critical condition.
The motive for the attack has not yet been established. Khan has previously been implicated in several high-profile investigations involving allegations of corruption, illicit precious metals trading, and the controversial 2021 Aeroton drug bust.
The shooting comes just days before Khan was scheduled to testify before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday, prompting public speculation about whether the attack may be linked to his planned appearance.
However, National Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe has urged the public not to jump to conclusions, saying it is too early to determine the motive behind the shooting. She stressed that investigators will follow all available evidence and warned against irresponsible speculation.
Mathe added that the South African Police Service views any attempt to intimidate, silence, or attack individuals involved in judicial processes with the utmost seriousness. She said any effort to interfere with the administration of justice or the work of the commission would be met with the full force of the law.
Police are continuing their investigation, and no arrests have been made at this stage.
