The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is urging parents and caregivers to remain vigilant as suspected Rotavirus infections increase in Pretoria.
The institute says children under the age of five are particularly vulnerable. At least one death has been reported in connection with the recent rise in cases.
Rotavirus is a common childhood infection that can cause severe vomiting and watery diarrhoea. The illness can become dangerous when a child loses too much fluid and becomes severely dehydrated.
NICD Principal Medical Scientist Professor Nicola Page says parents should watch closely for signs of dehydration and act quickly if they notice them. She advises caregivers to increase a child’s fluid intake and seek medical attention at a clinic or hospital when necessary.
Parents are therefore encouraged not to ignore persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, particularly during the current Rotavirus season.
