Three people, including a 75-year-old woman, have been arrested during a Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) Drug Unit operation targeting the illegal sale of medication in Atteridgeville and Olievenhoutbosch.
The operation, conducted on 5 August 2026, resulted in the arrest of a 75-year-old woman and her 35-year-old daughter-in-law in Atteridgeville after officers allegedly found them selling cough syrup in contravention of the Medicines Act.
In a separate operation in Olievenhoutbosch, a 35-year-old man was arrested after he was allegedly caught selling cough syrup and antidepressant tablets for casual consumption, also in violation of the Medicines Act.
TMPD said the arrests underscore the growing problem of criminal syndicates diverting medication intended for patients into the illegal market, placing vulnerable people who rely on essential treatment at risk.
All three suspects were detained at their respective local police stations and are expected to face charges related to contravening the Medicines Act.
