Former National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) employees have opened a theft case against a former board member accused of keeping 10 laptops that were meant to be donated to under-resourced schools in the Eastern Cape.
According to NSFAS, the laptops formed part of a donation drive held in March 2026, during which 30 laptops were allocated to six high schools. Each school was expected to receive five laptops for shared educational use, but 10 of the devices allegedly never reached their intended beneficiaries.
NSFAS Administrator Professor Hlengani Mathebula described the allegations as deeply disturbing, saying it was unacceptable for someone entrusted with supporting disadvantaged communities to allegedly deprive learners of much-needed educational resources.
Mathebula welcomed the decision by NSFAS employees to report the matter to the South African Police Service, saying it reflected a commitment to accountability and the fight against corruption within the organisation. He also expressed confidence that the police would investigate the case and ensure justice for the affected schools and learners.
