South Africans are being urged to prepare for severe winter weather as a powerful cold front is expected to sweep across the country from Sunday, 9 August.
According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), the weather system will first affect the Western and Northern Cape before spreading to the Eastern Cape and the rest of the country. The cold front is expected to bring cold to very cold temperatures, widespread rain, strong winds, rough sea conditions and snowfall over mountainous areas.
Snow is forecast for parts of the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, with the possibility of dangerous driving conditions, road closures and transport disruptions in affected areas.
SAWS has also warned of localised flooding in low lying areas, damage to infrastructure from strong winds and possible power outages. Farmers and communities are advised to take precautions to protect livestock and vulnerable people from the bitterly cold conditions.
