In a dramatic legal development that has sent shockwaves through South Africa’s political landscape, the Western Cape High Court has granted President Cyril Ramaphosa an interdict suspending the parliamentary impeachment inquiry against him. The ruling, handed down on Thursday, represents a significant legal victory for the President and effectively brings the work of the Section 89 Impeachment Committee to a grinding halt, at least for now.
The court’s decision came in response to an urgent application filed by Ramaphosa’s legal team, who argued that the impeachment process was procedurally flawed and that the President had not been afforded sufficient opportunity to respond to the allegations levelled against him. The inquiry, which was established to investigate claims of serious misconduct and constitutional violations, had been poised to enter a critical evidence-gathering phase when the interdict was granted.
