Four Dead After Shootout With Police at KwaDwesi in Gqeberha

Four men were shot dead on Tuesday night following a shootout with police in KwaDwesi, in the Motherwell policing precinct. Members of the Motherwell tactical response unit were on patrol when they approached a vehicle in Mtshekisani Street at approximately 20:00 on 6 October 2026. As officers moved in, the occupants opened fire, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire.

No police officers were injured. The four suspects were declared dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released pending notification of their families.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has launched an investigation, as is mandatory whenever police are involved in a death. IPID will examine whether the use of lethal force was justified and whether proper procedures were followed.

The shootout has heightened tensions in KwaDwesi and Kwazakhele, areas that have experienced violent crime in recent months. Residents have expressed mixed reactions, with some praising police action and others raising concerns about fatal police encounters.

Police defended their actions, stating that officers came under fire and responded in self-defence. As IPID investigates, the community awaits answers about what transpired, and whether the deaths could have been prevented.
