Police in the Free State are investigating a stock theft case after 45 sheep, valued at an estimated R151,000, were reported missing from a farm in the Steynsrus area.
The case was opened at the Steynsrus Police Station and is being investigated by the Heilbron Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit.
According to police, a 54-year-old farmer from Somerset Oos Farm noticed the shortage during a livestock count at Rietvlei Farm on Saturday, 29 August 2026.
The initial count conducted on Friday showed 186 SA Meat Merino sheep, comprising 85 ewes and 101 lambs. However, by Saturday, only 69 ewes and 72 lambs remained on the farm.
A total of 45 sheep — 16 ewes and 29 lambs — could not be accounted for, with their combined value estimated at R151,000.
Police further allege that some of the sheep were later found along the Steynsrus-Arlington gravel road, where they had reportedly been left sparsely scattered with their throats slit.
The Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit is continuing with the investigation, while police are appealing to anyone with information that could assist in identifying those responsible to come forward.
