In one of the largest drug busts at the country’s busiest port of entry, police have seized over R200 million worth of cocaine at OR Tambo International Airport following two separate, intelligence-driven interceptions that have dealt a significant blow to transnational narcotics trafficking networks. The operation, which unfolded over recent days, saw a multidisciplinary team of law enforcement officers intercept a total of 334 kilograms of cocaine, concealed in shipments bound for various destinations.
The drugs were reportedly discovered during targeted inspections of cargo and passenger luggage, with authorities crediting advanced screening technology, sniffer dog units, and tip-offs from international partners for the successful busts. Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, has applauded the vigilance and professionalism of the team involved, describing the operation as a “textbook example” of inter-agency collaboration.
“We are sending a clear message that OR Tambo is not a gateway for illegal drugs,” Dimpane said. “Our officers are alert, our systems are improving, and we will continue to disrupt the criminal networks that seek to use South Africa as a transit route.” Investigations are ongoing, with police pursuing the origin of the shipments and potential local distributors.
While no arrests have yet been publicly confirmed, sources within the SAPS have indicated that several individuals are being questioned in connection with the interceptions. The bust comes amid heightened international focus on drug trafficking routes through Africa, and South African authorities have vowed to strengthen partnerships with global law enforcement agencies to curb the flow of illicit substances.
The R200 million seizure is expected to be followed by court proceedings, with the State preparing to charge those implicated in the smuggling operation.
