Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Velenkosini Hlabisa, will officially proclaim the date for South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections on Friday, 7 August.
The proclamation is an important step in the country’s electoral process ahead of the 2026 municipal elections. Once the election date is published in the Government Gazette, the voters’ roll will officially close at midnight, preventing any further voter registrations or changes to existing voter details.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed that its online voter registration portal will remain open until the election date is officially announced. Eligible South Africans are therefore encouraged to register to vote or update their registration details before the deadline.
KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number of voter registration transactions during the registration weekend, followed by the Eastern Cape and Gauteng. The minister said all administrative preparations for the election proclamation had been completed in consultation with the IEC.
Hlabisa also urged all South Africans who will be 18 years old by 4 November to register before the voters’ roll closes. He encouraged citizens to participate in the democratic process by voting for councillors who will be accountable and responsive to the service delivery needs of their communities, rather than expressing dissatisfaction through protests.
