The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) has intensified its efforts to improve public transport safety, resulting in the impoundment of eight scholar transport vehicles during an operation conducted on the R101 near Hammanskraal on 30 July 2026.
The operation, led by the TMPD Public Transport Unit, focused on inspecting scholar transport vehicles to ensure compliance with transport regulations. Eight vehicles were impounded after they were found to be operating contrary to the conditions of the relevant legislation.
In a parallel operation, the TMPD Overload Control Unit (OCU) conducted load-compliance and roadworthiness inspections at the Centurion and Akasia weighbridges, where 65 heavy motor vehicles were stopped, inspected and weighed.
The inspections resulted in 13 warnings being issued, while nine overloaded vehicles were identified and required to rectify the infringements before continuing their journeys. Several AARTO 01 infringement notices were also issued for the offences detected during the operation.
The department said the enforcement campaign forms part of its ongoing efforts to improve road safety and ensure that public transport operators comply with legal and safety requirements.
“TMPD takes great strides in addressing unroadworthy vehicles that repeatedly violate the rules of the road and make driving hazardous in our city,” the department said.
The metro police have reiterated that compliance inspections and enforcement operations will continue across Tshwane as part of efforts to safeguard commuters, learners and all road users.
