In a decisive blow against illicit mining operations, police in Limpopo have confiscated a cache of heavy-duty equipment believed to have been deployed in illegal mining activities across the Atok and Madashoek areas within the Sekhukhune district. The haul, which included twelve high-capacity generators and four industrial jackhammers, was seized during a meticulously planned multi-disciplinary operation carried out in the early hours of Friday, 14 August.
The raid, which targeted suspected illegal mining hotspots in the Driekop policing area, involved members of the South African Police Service, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, and private security partners. Acting on intelligence gathered over several weeks, the team descended on the sites at dawn, catching those involved in the illicit operations off guard. While no arrests were made on the day, police confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that suspects have been identified.
Illegal mining has become a persistent scourge in the Sekhukhune region, which is rich in chrome, platinum, and other valuable minerals. The confiscated equipment—particularly the generators, which are often used to power makeshift crushing and extraction devices—are telltale signs of sophisticated zama zama operations that have been causing environmental degradation, safety hazards, and revenue losses for both the state and legitimate mining companies.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba praised the operation as a “significant step” in the ongoing campaign to dismantle illegal mining syndicates. “We are sending a clear message that the long arm of the law is closing in on those who plunder our natural resources,” Ledwaba said. The seized equipment will be kept for forensic examination, while police continue to pursue leads to bring the operators to justice.
