South African coach Eric Tinkler has parted ways with Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko after just four matches in charge, requesting his release to pursue an opportunity back home. The abrupt departure comes after a mixed start to his tenure, which yielded one win, two draws, and a 2-0 defeat to Aduana FC in his final outing.
Tinkler, a former Bafana Bafana international with extensive coaching experience at clubs including Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City, and SuperSport United, had been appointed to lead the Porcupine Warriors at the start of the season. However, sources indicate that the pull of a return to South Africa, linked in the media to Durban City FC in the Betway Premiership, proved too strong to resist, despite efforts by the Kotoko board to retain his services.
The coach met with the squad to express his gratitude and hinted at a possible future return to the club, a gesture that was warmly received by players and staff. Asante Kotoko, in a statement, confirmed the separation and praised Tinkler’s professionalism during his brief spell. “We thank Coach Tinkler for his dedication and wish him well in his future endeavours,” the club said.
The technical team will continue under the guidance of Director of Football Stanley Purl Menzo, who will oversee operations while the club considers its next move. Kotoko currently sit ninth in the Ghana Premier League standings and remain focused on their long-term objectives as they prepare for their next fixture against Karela United.
For Tinkler, the decision represents a calculated gamble, trading a high-profile role in Ghana for the familiarity and proximity of South African football. Whether the move pays off will depend on the opportunity that awaits him. For Kotoko, the search for stability continues, with the club eager to avoid further disruption to a season that has already seen its fair share of upheaval.
