Spaza shops cautioned over extra card payment fees

The National Consumer Commission has urged spaza shop owners to stop charging customers undisclosed fees when they pay for goods using bank cards.

The warning comes after complaints that some informal retailers are adding R2 or R5 to the advertised price for card transactions, while others reportedly require customers to spend a minimum amount before allowing card payments.

The NCC says these practices may violate Section 23 of the Consumer Protection Act, which requires businesses to charge the price displayed to customers.

The commission has called on consumers who experience such charges to report them, while it works with spaza shop structures to promote compliance with consumer protection laws.
