A protest over chronic water shortages in the eMbumbulu area turned tragically fatal on Monday morning when a municipal water tanker struck and killed a resident, casting a dark shadow over longstanding grievances about service delivery in the region.
The incident unfolded in Ward 96, where frustrated community members had gathered on a dirt road to voice their anger over the eThekwini Municipality’s failure to provide reliable water access. As a tanker arrived on the scene—presumably to deliver the very resource residents were demanding—the situation escalated. Videos later circulated online showing the vehicle striking Zungu, an adult man, as people surrounded it. The footage, which the municipality has since urged the public not to share out of respect for the deceased and his family, painted a chaotic picture of desperation meeting disaster.
The eThekwini Municipality has expressed its deepest condolences to Zungu’s loved ones, confirming that it is providing support to the bereaved family during this harrowing time. Mayor Cyril Xaba personally visited the family home to extend his sympathies and offer practical assistance with funeral arrangements, a gesture that local leaders have described as necessary but insufficient in the face of systemic service delivery failures.
