The Chairperson of Parliament’s Impeachment Committee, Makashule Gana, has formally opposed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s urgent court application to stop the committee’s work.
Gana filed opposing papers in the Western Cape High Court after National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza decided not to oppose the President’s application.
Ramaphosa is seeking an interdict against the committee, which was established to consider matters related to a possible impeachment process arising from the Phala Phala controversy.
According to Gana, the committee remains committed to carrying out its responsibilities while the legal matter is being considered by the courts. He said the committee is scheduled to meet on 24 June to discuss draft terms of reference and the appointment of evidence leaders.
Meanwhile, Didiza defended her decision not to oppose the President’s application, saying she is guided by the courts and Parliament’s obligation to implement the Constitutional Court’s judgment regarding the Section 89 report.
