The achievement, announced during a celebratory media briefing in Johannesburg on Wednesday, saw the province exceed its original goal of 1,326 procedures—a feat that officials have hailed as a testament to the dedication of healthcare workers and the power of collaborative action.
The month-long marathon, launched in early July to honor the legacy of Nelson Mandela through service to the nation, mobilized surgical teams across dozens of public hospitals in the province, including major academic centers like Chris Hani Baragwanath, Steve Biko, and Tembisa hospitals. A wide spectrum of procedures were performed, ranging from life-saving orthopedic surgeries and cataract removals to caesarean sections and tumor excisions, all aimed at reducing the province’s notoriously long surgical backlogs that have left thousands of patients languishing on waiting lists for months, and in some cases, years.
Provincial Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko expressed elation at the outcome, praising the “heroic efforts” of over 500 surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, and support staff who worked extended shifts, often over weekends, to ensure the target was not just met but broken. “We promised our people relief, and we delivered,” she declared, adding that the marathon would now be expanded into a quarterly initiative to systematically chip away at the remaining backlog.
