President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to take centre stage in a week of national reflection and remembrance as South Africa commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprisings and prepares to launch a campaign honouring some of the country’s most significant democratic milestones.
Ramaphosa will lead the National Youth Day Commemoration on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, where he will deliver the keynote address at the national event taking place at the FNB Premium Parking precinct adjacent to the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, Johannesburg. The commemoration forms part of nationwide activities marking five decades since the historic youth uprising that became a turning point in South Africa’s struggle against apartheid.
The Youth Day event comes just two days before the President officially launches the Milestones of Freedom Campaign at the Union Buildings in Tshwane on Thursday, 18 June 2026. The national programme is intended to commemorate key milestones in South Africa’s democratic journey while strengthening service delivery and promoting social cohesion under the theme, “Honouring the Past. Delivering the Future.”
This year marks several landmark anniversaries in the country’s history, including the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprisings, the 70th anniversary of the anti-pass campaign and the 60th anniversary of the forced removals from District Six. Government says these milestones reflect the long struggle for democracy and freedom while highlighting the ongoing journey towards a more inclusive and equitable society.
The Presidency says the campaign also signals government’s commitment to building on democratic gains and accelerating service delivery to communities. Leaders from government, business, civil society and youth organisations are expected to attend the launch at the Union Buildings.
The National Youth Day Commemoration will take place from 10:00 to 17:00 on 16 June at the FNB Stadium Open Field in Nasrec, Johannesburg. The Milestones of Freedom Campaign launch is scheduled for 11:30 on 18 June at the Union Buildings in Tshwane.
