Gauteng Acting Premier Faith Mazibuko on Thursday tabled the Gauteng Department of Community Safety Budget Vote for the 2026/2027 financial year at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, outlining the department’s plans to strengthen crime prevention, school safety, road safety and the fight against gender-based violence and femicide.
Presenting the budget, Mazibuko highlighted the department’s ongoing efforts to keep learning institutions safe. “The Department continued implementing school safety programmes aimed at ensuring that schools remain safe environments for teaching and learning,” she said.
Mazibuko reported that during the year under review, the department conducted 522 school safety interventions at schools, 11 interventions at institutions of higher learning, and 8,947 crime prevention operations at identified high-risk schools. She said these initiatives form part of the province’s broader strategy to create safer learning environments and protect learners and educators from crime and violence.
“The Department continued implementing school safety programmes aimed at ensuring that schools remain safe environments for teaching and learning. During the year under review, 522 school safety interventions were conducted in schools, 11 interventions at institutions of higher learning and 8,947 crime prevention operations were conducted at identified high-risk schools,” said Mazibuko.
She further noted that air-wing crime prevention operations contributed to preventing armed robberies, disrupting illegal mining activities, arresting suspects linked to house robberies and supporting interventions targeting hijacked buildings. The department also continued implementing programmes aligned with the National Strategic Plan on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, focusing on prevention, victim support, justice system strengthening and community mobilisation.
Following the tabling of the budget vote, members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature are expected to debate the department’s budget and priorities for the 2026/27 financial year.
