Gauteng Department raises awareness on elder abuse

The Gauteng Department of Social Development has expressed concern over the ongoing abuse of elderly people, saying many older persons continue to suffer in silence and are often mistreated by individuals they know and trust.

The department stated recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which seeks to highlight the abuse, neglect, and exploitation experienced by older persons.

According to the department, elder abuse can take many forms, including physical violence, emotional and psychological abuse, financial exploitation, neglect, abandonment, and violations of the rights of older persons.

The department further indicated that many incidents of abuse are committed by people who are familiar to the elderly and have been entrusted with their care and support.

Gauteng Social Development MEC Dloze Matooane reaffirmed the department’s commitment to protecting older persons and strengthening programmes aimed at promoting their safety, dignity and overall well-being.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting older persons from all forms of abuse and ensuring that their rights and dignity are respected.
