The high-profile pre-trial hearing in the case of convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester is set to resume in the Free State High Court on Friday, as the State continues to build its case against the man whose brazen escape from Mangaung Correctional Centre in May 2022 stunned the nation and exposed deep flaws in South Africa’s correctional system. Bester, along with several co-accused, faces a raft of charges stemming from his dramatic flight from justice, including aiding and abetting an escape, arson, and violating a corpse.
The charges relate to the elaborate scheme that allowed Bester to fake his own death and walk out of the maximum-security prison. Investigators allege that a burnt body was deliberately placed in Bester’s cell to mislead authorities, while he escaped with the help of accomplices, including his then-girlfriend, celebrity doctor Nandipha Magudumana, who is also among the accused. The pair were eventually recaptured in Tanzania in April 2023 and extradited back to South Africa.
