A 36-year-old man has been taken into custody for questioning following a dramatic crossfire between police officers attached to Operation Vala Umgodi and a group of suspected illegal miners in the Mpumalanga town of Barberton. The intense exchange of gunfire, which unfolded in broad daylight, has once again thrust the escalating crisis of illegal mining into the national spotlight.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, members of the specialised anti-illegal mining unit were conducting routine patrols in an area known to harbour zama zama operations when they encountered a group of individuals believed to be engaged in illicit mining activities. As officers moved to confront the group, a silver Toyota Avanza suddenly arrived at the scene. Without warning, the occupants of the vehicle opened fire on the police, triggering a chaotic shootout that sent nearby residents scrambling for cover.
Police returned fire, and the suspects fled the scene, leaving behind the Toyota Avanza, which had sustained multiple bullet holes. No officers were injured during the exchange, but it remains unclear whether any of the suspected illegal miners were hit. A subsequent search of the area led to the apprehension of the 36-year-old man, who was found in possession of items believed to be linked to the shootout. He is currently being held for questioning and is expected to face charges related to attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms, and contravention of the Precious Metals Act.
