IEC Announces Second Voter Registration Weekend After 2.9 Million Transactions

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has announced that a second voter registration weekend will be held on 1 and 2 August 2026, giving eligible citizens another opportunity to register and update their voting details ahead of this year’s Local Government Elections.

The announcement follows a successful first registration weekend, during which the IEC recorded 2.9 million voter registration transactions across the country. The figure includes new registrations and updates to voter information, highlighting strong public participation in the electoral process.

The IEC thanked South Africans for their turnout and encouraged those who missed the first registration weekend to make use of the August registration period. Registration services will once again be brought directly to communities to ensure easier access for voters, while online registration and updates remain available through the IEC’s voter registration portal.

In a statement, the Commission said: “South Africa, you showed up. A remarkable 2.9 million voter registration transactions were recorded during the Voter Registration Weekend, reflecting South Africans’ commitment to participating in the 2026 Local Government Elections.”

The second registration weekend is expected to be a crucial milestone in preparations for the 2026 Local Government Elections, scheduled for 4 November 2026, as the IEC continues efforts to ensure all eligible voters are ready to cast their ballots.
