Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga has officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art military hospital at the Forest Hill base in Gqeberha, marking a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to enhance healthcare provision for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and their dependents in the Eastern Cape. The R625 million facility, which took nearly three years to complete, is set to transform medical services for military personnel stationed in the region, who have long faced challenges in accessing specialized care.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Motshekga emphasized that the hospital represents a tangible commitment to the welfare of those who serve the nation. “Our soldiers and their families deserve nothing less than world-class medical care,” she said. “This facility is not just about bricks and mortar; it is about dignity, readiness, and the recognition that the health of our defence force is fundamental to national security.”
The hospital is equipped with a modern diagnostic centre, comprehensive radiology services, an on-site pharmacy, and dedicated rehabilitation facilities designed to cater to a wide range of medical needs—from routine check-ups to post-operative recovery and physiotherapy. The facility is also expected to serve as a training ground for military medical personnel, strengthening the SANDF’s capacity to respond to health emergencies both at home and during peacekeeping missions abroad.
Local military veterans and community leaders have welcomed the development, noting that the Eastern Cape has historically been underserved in terms of dedicated military healthcare infrastructure. The hospital is expected to alleviate pressure on overburdened public health facilities in the Nelson Mandela Bay metropolitan area.
